This Little Red Riding Hood street art first got attention
in 2013. It is located in the City of Fremantle, Australia as a political
statement symbolizing the local government’s recently passed law of covering
street art when deemed appropriate. The wolf is depicted painting over the
colorful artwork, muttering “I’m just doing my job” while Red watches in
disappointment. This graffiti can be interpreted as the political statement of
local bureaucracy simply doing their job of covering street art while the artist
watches their masterpiece disappear. Red is helpless in this rendition, much
like Red is helpless in familiar LRRH renditions. Government can be viewed as
the Wolf and its unopposed authority while Red is the defenseless artist. I interpret
this piece as blooming creativity being suppressed by an intimidating presence—dictating
the limits of imagination and creative spirit. I really like this particular
piece because street art murals are captivating examples of political, social
and cultural stances and/or oppositions. The tree and sky are vibrant against
the washed out wolf and defeated Red. The color contrast really sheds light on
the symbolic appeal of the characters. I would be smitten if my property was
struck with this graffiti!
